Family Rememberances: Eben - started many auction yards throughout his lifetime. They (the family) traveled all over the Midwest and West Coast. During the later years (-1940's), many yards were established in Washington, Oregon, California and Idaho. It seems the Obit for him is not entirely accurate in that it infers he was living in Oregon for the last five years (1945-50). Not exactly true. They (Eben, Harold , Sylvan) started several auction yards during that period of time (in Roseburg, Eugene, and Sweet Home (Oregon); Couer d'alene (Idaho); Colfax (Washington) and probably others. My dad (Pal) claimed that Eben started the Roseville (California) auction, which, I believe, is still going in the Sacramento area. They were never in one place too long (1 - 2 years maybe) Everyone worked, (and worked hard) in the yards. The men handled the auction - the women handled the clerking/books and lunchrooms. Eben, Harold and Sylvan were all auctioneers, and the boys doubled as ringmen/stockmen. Vinni and Bette handled the clerking, books and lunchroom items.
There were two registered brands for Eben Nathan -- Either Nebraska or SD (perhaps both)-- these were the NOL (or perhaps EOL) and the Spearhead E. Pal and Bill wanted to register the Flying H or Flying E Brands but never did.
Throughout their lives they were known by various names: Eben was known as Colonel Edwards (sometimes "Pappy Edwards" aka"Ebbie"). He died from a heart attack (age 65); Sylvan was known as Bill; (have no idea how Bill resulted, but my Dad told me Isabelle named him after Sylvan Lake, which she thought was a beautiful place); also known as Sylvan Leon and Sylvan Levi; Harold was known as Pal; Isabelle (wife of Eben) was known as Vinni (two children from a prior marriage (Virgil was known as Capp; and Delane)
