Career

  • Leonowens is best known for her account of the court of King Mongkut of Siam, where she worked as a teacher.
  • She also founded Victoria College of Art in Halifax, Nova Scotia which gradually evolved into NSCAD University.
  • The 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam, by Margaret Landon, was based on the life of Anna. The novel led to a 1951 stage play of the same name, and then to a 1956 movie titled The King and I.
