Leonowens is best known for her account of the court of King Mongkut of Siam, where she worked as a teacher.
She also founded Victoria College of Art in Halifax, Nova Scotia which gradually evolved into NSCAD University.
The 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam, by Margaret Landon, was based on the life of Anna. The novel led to a 1951 stage play of the same name, and then to a 1956 movie titled The King and I.
A good source for Anna's family and life story is Susan Morgan's "The Real Story and Remarkable Adventures of The King and I".
