Biography

Mary, maiden name not yet confirmed, married first Robert Pond; then married second Edward Shepard Jr.[1]

Some claim her maiden name was Ball, but this appears to be based solely on derivative, unsourced material.

She married Robert Pond, Nov 18, 1612 in Suffolk, England.

Robert and Mary Pond came from Groton, Suffolk, England to Massachusetts in 1630 with the Winthrop fleet of 11 ships. In this group:
John Pond of Groton, Suffolk to Boston [returned to England] Robert Pond of Groton, Suffolk to Dorchester [carpenter, d 1637] Mrs. Mary Pond [wife of Robert; m 2nd John Blackman]

About 1649 she married Edward Shepard.
After she married 2nd to Edward Shepard of Cambridge, her son Daniel Pond married in 1661 Edward's daughter Abigail Shepard. (Edward Shepard was an ancestor of Presidents George Bush thru his daughter Deborah Shepard Fairbanks.)

On 10 May 1679, there is an entry for her and a Pond daughter in Cambridge: "Mary, now the wife of the foresaid Edward Shepard,[who had just attained freemanship, was dismissed hither from Ch. at Dorchester, and is f.c. [full communion?] with us. Her dau. Mary Pond baptized at Dorchester, was eleven years old at her mother's joyning with us.[2]

Edward Shepard's will dated 4 Oct 1674, proved June 1680 named wife Mary.[3]

There is no record that she had any children by Shepard.

Notes: A previous version of this profile had parents: William Ball emigrant to New Haven where he died in 1647, and Alice Waltham. However, William Ball died without issue, and the name of his wife is not known.[4]

Similarly, there is no proof of the surname/maiden name of the wife of Robert Pond; therefore we are merging this Mary Ball away into Mary Unknown.

Rob, do you have any source for her marriage to Robert Pond? We've got some discrepancies about who he was married to that we're trying to resolve. Thanks!
