Biography

Birth: Sarah was born February 25, 1818 in Hardin County, Kentucky (likely in the part of the county that is now LaRue County). She was the youngest daughter of William Edwards and Sarah Keith, and had six older siblings (Elizabeth, John, James, Jacob, Priscilla, and William), and a younger brother, Jesse.

Marriage to Isaiah Steenbarger on May 30, 1840 in Bartholomew County, Indiana.[1]

1850 Census: "Sarah Steenbarger," 32, was living in Columbus Township, Bartholomew County, Indiana with her husband Isaah, 30, and children, John C., 4, George W., 2, and Joseph, 7/12. A 23 year old William McDowell, farmer, is also living in the household. She is listed born in Kentucky. [2]

1860 Census: "Sarah Steinbarger," 42, was living in Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana with her husband Isaiah, 40, and children, John C., 14, George W., 13, Joseph E., 10, Telitha, 8, Uriah, 5, and Abraham L., 4. A 21-year-old Eliza Doolittle is also living with them. She is listed born in Kentucky.[3]

1870 Census: "Sarah Steenbarger," 51, was living in Columbus Township, Bartholomew County, Indiana with her husband Isaiah, 50, and children, Joseph, 20, Uriah, 17, Abram, 14, Lizzie, 5, and Elijah, 8. A 22-year-old Amanda Garrison, domestic servant, and 40-year-old James Kehoe, farm hand, are also living with them. She was listed keeping house, born in Kentucky.[4]

Death: Sarah died February 23, 1874 in Bartholomew County, Indiana, age 55. She is buried at Steenbarger Cemetery in Taylorsville, Bartholomew County, Indiana[5].

1. James Solomon Steinbarger: James was born August 31, 1841 and died May 22, 1842 in Bartholomew County, Indiana.

2. Mary P. Steinbarger: Mary was born in 1843 and died July 16, 1844 in Bartholomew County, Indiana.

3. Josiah Steinbarger: Josiah was born and died December 22, 1844 in Bartholomew County, Indiana.

4. John Clark Steinbarger: John was born October 31, 1845 in Columbus, Indiana. He was a blacksmith and farmer and married Rhoda Jane Talley on November 29, 1866. They had three children: Walter Franklin (1872), Cora May (1877), and Katie B. (1887). He died in Columbus on August 26, 1914, age 68.

5. George William Steinbarger: George was born November 27, 1847 in Bartholomew County. He was a farmer, laborer, and manager, and married Luella Alspaugh on January 30, 1867. She likely died quickly after their marriage. He then married Sarah E. Steinbarger on October 9, 1867. She was his second cousin. They had three children: Orrestus C. (1868), Luetta (1873), and Ella F. (1878). They divorced about 1891 and George married Sarah Victoria Stodghill on February 16, 1898. He died in Columbus on October 9, 1927, age 79.

6. Joseph Edwards Steinbarger: Joseph was born December 22, 1849. He was a farmer and married Martha Frances "Mattie" Matson about 1874. They had six children: Clara Alice (1875), Harry Edgar (1877), Thomas Franklin (1879), Sarah Levina (1881), Myrtle Edna (1883), and Ivy (1885). He died December 30, 1912 in Petersville, age 63.

7. Telitha Mary Steinbarger: Telitha, who sometimes also went by her middle name Mary, was born February 8, 1852 in Bartholomew County. She married Perry James Ross on December 17, 1868 and had five children: Albert G. (1871), Nell M. (1877), Charlie (1880), Oscar E. (1882), and John (1887). She died December 6, 1921 in Columbus, age 69.

8. Uriah M. Steinbarger: Uriah was born January 7, 1854 in Bartholomew County. He was a street sprinkler in Columbus and lived there all his live. He married Elizabeth Lydia Hill on October 16, 1880 - they had one child, Ivy Lessie, who died in 1883. He died in Columbus on November 1, 1919 in Columbus, age 65.

9. Abraham Leonard Steinbarger: Abraham, or Abram, was born November 12, 1856 in Indiana. He was a farmer in Bartholomew County all his life, and married Ludenie Elizabeth Parker on February 8, 1877 in Indiana. They had four children: Josephine Mary (1880), Roy Leonard (1883), Otis Earl (1886), and Edgar Leonard (1889). She died in 1920, and he married a second time to Lulu Belle Green on April 7, 1925. He died in Clay Township on July 13, 1932, age 75.

10. Elijah S. Steinbarger: Elijah, also known as Eli, was born on July 2, 1861 in Bartholomew County. He was a farmer in Columbus all his life and married Malinda Caroline "Callie" Barmes on June 28, 1883, age 21. They had seven children: Bert Isaiah (1884), Pearl May (1886), William Elijah (1889), Charles Henry (1893), Perry F. (1896), Hazel Elizabeth (1901), and Paul Eugene (1904). He died in Columbus on January 10, 1941, age 79.

11. Elizabeth M. (Lizzie) Steinbarger: Lizzie was born October 19, 1864 in Bartholomew County. She married Ervin David Griffin on August 15, 1884 and moved to Brown County. They had seven children: Bertha Mae (1886), Edith Mary (1889), Raymond Morris (1892), Ralph Ervin (1897), Mildred (1899), Laura Maud (1901) and Myrtle Iva (1905). She died February 7, 1950 in Brown County, age 85.
