Biography

Abigail was born in 1765, the daughter of Stephen Egleton and Sarah Byford.

Abigail married George Leighton in 1785 in Bermondsey, Surrey. The register states that George Leighton Batchelor of this parish and Abigail Egleton of the same parish spinster married by Banns 19th October 1785, witnesses were Archibald Leighton and Stephen Egleton [1]

The marriage is also recorded in Pallot's marriage index.[2]

Abigail died aged 67 in 1833 and was buried on the 9th March 1833 at Bunhill Fields non-conformist burial ground, London. The record of her burial states she was aged 67 and that her body was brought from Clerkenwell.[3][4]

Membership of the Sandemanian Church

Abigail was a member of the Sandemanian Church

She was included in the Sandemanian Church London list 1795[5]

Abigail was admited into membership on the 25th February 1795.

Her husband George was a member of the Sandemanian church, and is included in the list of members Sandemanian members list London as compiled by Geoffrey Cantor. According to the members list, he was born in 1826, was admitted into the church in 1845 and died in 1895. He was also an Elder in the Church. Church records state that his wife Abigail was also a Sandemanian (see research notes).

Research Notes

Have searched using ScotlandsPeople, FreeReg, FamilySearch, FindMyPast and Ancestry, including Family Public Trees but not including Ancestry's Worldwide Membership, but to no avail regarding a source for Abigail's birth. Pickup-178 11:55, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Abigail does not appear in the main membership of the London Sandemanian church, (see London Sandemanian Church membership list 1762 – 1868 for the full membership list) but she is included in the 1795 list.

Her parents were probably Stephen Egleton (1734-) and Sarah (Byford) Egleton (1740-1791) who were married in 1765 in London, a year before she was born. This is based on her parents being members of the Sandemanian church, her father probably being a witness at her marriage and her husband being a Sandemanian.
