PARENTAGE

Hartwell Elder, a possible son of David Elder and Polly Phillips
Most genealogies assume Hartwell is son of David Elder, but this cannot be proven, except by process of elimination.
Hartwell and/or Hartwell's children are not listed as hiers in David Elder's will, even though Hartwell lived in close proximety to David in 1830/1840, and Hartwell's widowed wife and children continued to live close to David in 1850.
Note: David lists other deceased children (and their hiers), but not Hartwell.
Hartwell was married before 1820, so parents cannot be assumed by parents census. Hartwell died before 1850, so parents cannot be assumed by birthplace.
Other potential fathers for Hartwell have been excluded.
These are Hartwell's uncles, John and Joshua.
John Elder is not considered a possible father of Hartwell, because Hartwell was a minor in 1812. The minor children of John are listed in guardianship papers, and it does not include Hartwell.
Joshua Elder is probably not considered a father, because he had a Will in 1849. Joshua's Will listed children, both alive and deceased. It does not appear that Joshua has excluded any obvious children. Hartwell is not in Joshua's Will.

Hartwell M. Elder, fifth child of David Elder and first of Mollie Phillips, was born in Virginia on April 6, 1789 and came to Georgia in January, 1807, with David, his father. He married Pamelia Tigner December 21, 1817 in Clarke county (now Oconco). He died in Texas in 1844. Parmelia was born June 26, 1798 and died in Texas in May, 1848. Hartwell and Pamelia raised a large family of eleven children.
Note: Census records contradict death dates in Texas. The 1850 census shows widowed wife Pamelia and children still living in Clark Co Georgia.
Children of Hartwell summarized from the book:
1) Nancy Tigner, b. 8 Oct 1818, d. 1877, married Joseph Hale
2) Edmond J., b. 24 Dec 1820, d. 1854, had 4 boys

INNOCENCE ELDER assumed daughter of Hartwell Elder:
There is no evidence to prove that a child named Innocence ever existed. Undocumented sources say Innocence died in 1854, but where is she in 1850?
Hartwell's 1830 and 1840 census does show the existence of female age 10-14 (b.1826-30), who then disappears before Hartwell's 1850 census.
Mary Elder(b.1826) also fits the description, as she married 1841. Undocumented sources say Mary is daughter of Edmond Elder, but cannot be proven. Mary could just as easily be daughter of Hartwell Elder. There is nothing to prove or disprove Mary as daughter of either one of these fathers.
Frances Elder(b.1830-32) fits the description, as she married 1846, but Frances appears in 1844 guardianship records as orphan of Joseph M Elder. Frances is not daughter of Hartwell Elder.
NANCY ELDER assumed daughter of Hartwell Elder:
Assumption based on following:
1) Father Hartwell Elder's 1830 census shows existance of female age 10-14
2) Father Hartwell Elder's 1840 census is missing this daughter.
3) Nancy Elder maried 1836 in Clarke Co. GA (before father's 1840 census)
4) The marriage date of father, Hartwell Elder, in 1817.
Another potential father, Edmond Elder, also has daughter with same 1830 criteria; born 1816-20, and married before 1840. Except that Edmond married several years before Hartwell. Hartwell didn't marry until 1817.
Therefore, by default:
Nancy Elder (b.1818) is child of Hartwell Elder (married 1817)
Elizabeth Elder (b.1816) is child of Edmond Elder (married 1810)
Summary:
1850: Nancy Hale age 31, Salem, Clarke, Georgia, family#818/16
1860: Nancy T Hale age 41, Pea Town, Beat 8, Rusk, Texas, family#946
1870: Nancy T Hale age 51, Henderson, Precinct 3, Rusk, Texas, family#215
DAVID Y ELDER, assumed son of Hartwell Elder:
Assumption based on following:
David is living next to confirmed son (Phillip) of Hartwell in 1850 Alabama,
and widowed wife Elizabeth is living in household of Phillip Elder in 1880.
Note: Elizabeth's sister married Phillip Elder.
1843 David married Marieah E. Lanniers, on 21 Sep 1843, Morgan GA
1850: census, David Y Elder age 25, District 62, Morgan, Georgia
1852: David married Elizabeth Wilson, on 22 Jul 1852, Morgan Co. GA
1860: census, David Y Elder age 36, Township 12, St Clair, Alabama
1870: census, David Y Elder age 50, Township 9, Cherokee, Alabama

1870: Phillips Elder age 39, Township 12 Range 4, Etowah, Alabama
1880: Philip T. Elder age 43, Precinct 2, DeWiit, Texas, family#230
EDMOND G ELDER, assumed son of Hartwell Elder:
Assumption based on following:
1) Father Hartwell Elder's 1830 census shows existance of male age 10-14
2) Father Hartwell Elder's 1840 census shows existance of male age 20-29
3) Father Hartwell Elder's 1850 census is missing this son.
4) Edmond G Elder married 1846 in Clarke Co. GA (before 1850 census).
5) Marriage date of father, Hartwell Elder, in 1817.
Note:
Another potential father, Edmond Elder, also has son with same 1840 criteria; born 1811-20, and married before 1850. Except that Edmond married several years before Hartwell. Hartwell didn't marry until 1817.
Therefore, by default:
Edmond G Elder (b.1820) is child of Hartwell Elder (married 1817)
David R Elder (b.1813) is child of Edmond Elder (married 1810)
Summary:
1846: Edmonds G Elder, married 4 Feb 1846, to Susan Huey [Hughey]
1850: Ed G Elder, age 30, Salem, Clarke, Georgia, family#807
