My grandfather Charles Bruce Elder was gassed at Ypres serving in the Kings Liverpool Regiment and returned ca 1917. He and his family moved into Richmond House with his mother.

His son Charles Bruce Elder, a kind man with no head for money, joined the firm but after his father’s death and his return after being gassed at Ypres in WWI they closed down the Liverpool Branch and gave him a gratuity. He opened a newsagents, library and confectioners in Lisburn Lane, Liverpool with my grandmother. Rather down market for his family. He couldn't make it work and he went on a slippery slope of smaller and smaller shops with less stock until he had no capital. He bought all the part books in his shop and had them bound rather then sell them. They were bombed in WWII, ---- a Land Mine landed across the road and it took out half the street. Charles died in November 1945 aged 65.
However, with thanks to Robin McEwan-King Charles Bruce Elder died 9 January 1947. ELDER Charles Bruce of 18 Woodgreen Rd., Stoneycroft, Liverpool 13 died 9 January 1947. Administration Liverpool 20 May to Douglas Bruce Elder assistant manager. Effects about 440 pounds.
