Biography

Janet Elder was the daughter of William Elder and Janet Graham.

Janet Elder was born on 20 June 1812 at the village of Dolphinton in the parish of Dolphinton in the county of Lanarkshire in Scotland. ^[1]

She was baptised on 05 July 1812 at Dolphinton. The witnesses were Thomas Cleghorn and John Brown, both indwellers Galeside. ^[1]

She was the youngest of the five known children of William Elder, servant to Mr. Mackenzie of Dolphinton and Janet Graham, his spouse. ^[1]

She had one sister:

1. Christina Elder (born 18 March 1795) ^[2]

and three brothers:

2. Alexander Elder (07 July 1801) ^[4] &
3. John Mackenzie Elder (15 July 1803). ^[5]

On 10 July 1835, she married Walter Fergus Rae (14 December 1814) in Dolphinton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She was 23 years old when she married Walter Fergus Rae, who was 20 years old at that time.

She had six children with Walter Fergus Rae:

At the census of 06 June 1841, Janet Elder was described as aged 25, and living at 3 Canon Street in Edinburgh. Also present were her husband, Walter Rare, aged 25, a gardener and their children William aged 3 and Walter aged 1. ^[6]

On 30 March 1851, Janet Elder was described as aged 37 and living at 6 Simpson's Court, Wilson's Land in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Also in the household were her husband, Walter Rae aged 40, a Keeper at the Zoological Gardens in Edinburgh and their children: William, aged 13, Brass Founder's Apprentice; Walter, aged 11, message boy; Thomas, aged 5; Robert Tod, aged 2; and Margaret aged 5 months. ^[7]

At the census of 07 April 1861, Janet Elder was described as aged 47 and living at 15 Campbell's Close in Edinburgh. Also present in the household was her husband, Walter Fergus Rae, aged 46, a Labourer; and their children: William, aged 23, Slater; Thomas, aged 15, Glass Cutter; Robert, aged 12, Message Boy; and Margaret, aged 9. ^[8]

At the census of 02 April 1871, Janet Elder was described as aged 57,and living at 9 Tolbooth Wynd on the Canongate in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Also present were her husband, Walter Fergus Rae aged 56, a Labourer (Foundry); and their children: Thomas, aged 25; and Robert, aged 22. ^[9]

At the census of 03 April 1881, Janet Elder was described as aged 67, and living at 2 Reid's Close, Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Also in the household was her husband, Walter Fergus Rae, aged 66, a Stationary Shop Porter. ^[10]

On 07 March 1885, Janet Elder died at 2 Reids Close, 80 Canongate in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. She was described as aged 71 and married to Walter Rae, Porter (Paper Warehouse). Her parents were described as William Elder, Agricultural Labourer (deceased) and Janet Elder, M.S. Graham (deceased). The cause of death was recorded as Senile decay. There was no qualified medical attendant. The death was registered on 09 March 1885 at Edinburgh by her husband, Walter Rae, who had been present. ^[18]
