Biography

Birth and Early Years

Bailey Elder was born 15 April 1813 at Cumberland County, Kentucky, the location where his parents were living at the time of his birth. (This area became part of Monroe County in 1820.) [1]

He was, likely, one of the 3 males under the age of 10, living in the household of Peter Elder, in the 1820 U.S. Census, at Monroe County, Kentucky. [2]

He was, likely, the male, age 10-15 (though he was actually 16- or 17-years-old), living in the household of Peter Elder, in the 1830 U.S. Census, at Jackson County, Tennessee. [3]

Marriage and Family Life

Bailey Elder married Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) Goings on 7 Nov 1839 at Benton County, Missouri. [4]

He appeared as Head of Household on the census of 1840 at Alexander Township, Benton County, Missouri. The household included 1 male age 20-29, 1 male under age 5; 1 female age 20-29, 1 female under age 5; 1 person in the household was employed in agriculture. His household included himself, his wife, Elizabeth, and her two children from her prior marriage.[5]

He appeared as Head of Household on the census of 1850 at District 15, Carroll County, Missouri. He was listed as a 34-year-old farmer, born in Kentucky, with real estate valued at $300. He was living with his wife, one step-child, and four children. His step-child, John, was listed as John Elder, though he was the son of Elizabeth's first husband, an unknown Goings. [6]

He, unsuccessfully, tried to lay out a town called Bailville in Section 21 of Fairfiled Township, in 1856. [7]

He appeared as Head of Household on the census of 1860 at Morris Township, Carroll County, Missouri. He was listed as a 47-year-old farmer with real estate valued at $4,920, and personal estate valued at $3,250. He was living with his wife and four children. [8]

Bailey's wife, Elizabeth, died in 1868. Bailey, evidently, sold his land and moved with three of his children to Kansas, for, in 1870, he was listed as a 49-year-old laborer, living in the household of his son, Thomas Elder, at 3-WD Atchison, Atchison County, Kansas. Also living in the household were Thomas' wife and child, and Bailey's children, James and "Cerilda". [9] Bailey was not found on the 1880 U.S. Census.

Death

Bailey Elder died on 13 September 1880 at Andrew County, Missouri, while visiting his son, James Bailey Elder. His burial location is unknown. [1] [7]
