Biography

Sarah Elder was born to Peter Elder and Elizabeth between 1771 and 1775. [Using the age ranges from 1820-1840 censuses]. Her father was on the tax list in 1771 at Peter Helder in Surry County North Carolina, providing a hint to her birthplace. Sarah was the eighth of eleven children growing up in Surry County. The Elder and Deavenport families are on the same page in the 1790 US census for Surry County, North Carolina. Sarah married a neighborhood man, John Davenport on 22 December 1795 in Surry County. Sarah was also known on some documents as Sally. Her mother-in-law was also named Sarah, so changing to Sally would avoid confusion since the families are in the same area for 3twenty years. John and Sarah had at least seven known children, Henry b. 1797, Ephraim b. 1799, and both born in North Carolina1797-1800. Four more children, John Jr. b. 1801, Nancy b. 1802 were born in Casey Co, Kentucky followed ten years later, William b. 1812, Tilman b. 1814 and Thomas b. 1817. The gap between locations and children sets does not yet have an explanation. A possible second wife can be ruled out as autosomal DNA of similar size is shared with descendants of John, Henry, Nancy and William. Sarah is named in the will of her father, Peter Elder on 6 Mar 1804 as Sarah Davenport. She inherited one sixth of his 400 acre property . Her husband John Davenport is listed in the Sale bill for the Estate of Peter Elder, Dec’d in 1804. On the 1810 US census for Casey Co, Kentucky, Sarah was 37y and marked as a female 26-45y, living in the Jno Devenport household. He is listed as a male 36-45y [39y], 2 males <10y[Wm 9 y, John Jr. 8 y], 2 males 10-15y [Henry 13y, Ephraim 11y], a female <10y [Nancy 9y]. Neighbors within 5 houses included, her in-laws, Wm Davenport, and brothers-in-law families. John’ and Sarah Davenport are listed as members of the South Fork Separate Baptist Church 1801-1834. On the 1820 US census, for Casey Co, Kentucky, Sarah is listed as a female over 45y [was 47y], living in the household of John Deavenporte is enumerated as over 45y [49y], 3 males < 10y[ Thos, 3y, Tillman 5y, Wm 8y] male 10-15y [?] male 16-18y[John Jr. 19y] and female 10-15y [?] female 16-25y [Nancy 18y]. Next door neighbors include her in-laws, Wm Deavenporte household. On the 1830 census for Casey Co, Kentucky, Sarah is probably the female tick mark 50-60y, living in John Devenport household. He was listed as a 50-60 yr old with sons 10-15y [Thomas, 13y], 15-20y [Tillman 16y]. Married sons, John Jr. and Ephraim’s families are listed next door with wives and their children[her grandchildren]. Her son, John Davenport Jr, died in May 1834. Like any involved father, John Davenport Sr. went to Casey County Court to motion for Administration as his son’s widow declined. John Sr. was granted a Letter of Administration for John Davenport Jr. dec’d estate along with Lewis Pigg with a $400 security bond, 8 June 1835. Her husband, John Sr, died between 8 June and 12 Oct 1835. John is buried at South Fork Baptist Church. Sarah is then listed in the Casey County, Kentucky Tax lists from 1837-1849, with 75 acres [dower rights]. In October 1836, her son, Ephraim Davenport buys land from the heirs of John Davenport, Sr. which included two tracts of land [145 acres] on the South Fork of the Green River from Geo. Dooley next to the dower land of Sarah Davenport. The deed is signed by the heirs of John Davenport Sr.,[children of John and Sarah] and included: Henry, Thomas, William, Tillman, & Nancy & John Barrow[son John was dec’d in 1834/35]. This ties all seven children together and to the land of their mother and father, John Davenport and Sarah “Sally” Davenport. Sarah Elder Davenport died in 1848. She was buried next to her husband, John at Southfork Baptist Church Cemetery in Casey County, Kentucky. Her oldest son, Henry petitions the court in February 1849 to be the administrator of her estate. Appraisement and a Bill of Sale are approved 21 February 1849.
