Biography

Birth and Origins

Philip Eliot was baptized at Widford, Hertfordshire on 25 April 1602, the son of Bennett and Lettice (Aggar) Eliot at St. John the Baptist Church, Widford, England[1]

Immigration

He and his brother John were on the passenger list for the Lyon that arrived in Boston in Nov 1631. If he sailed, he soon returned to England. His wife and children emigrated on the Hopewell in 1635; Philip was either missed on the list or sailed earlier. The family made their residence in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

He was a freeman March 25, 1636; a member of the Artillery Co., 1638; Deputy to the General Court 1654-1657; Deacon in the Roxbury Church; one of the five men to order the prudential affairs of the town; and Feoffee of the Public School in Roxbury.[2]

Marriage and Children

He marred Elizabeth Sybthorpe, daughter of Robert and Anne Sybthorpe on 28 Oct 1624 St Andrews by the Wardrobe, City of London,[3] and together they had the following children:[4]

  1. Elizabeth baptized Nazeing 8 April 1627. Married by 1649 Richard Withington.
  2. Sarah baptized Nazeing 26 Jan. 1628/9. Married John Aldis on 27 Sept. 1650 in Dedham.
  3. Lydia baptized Nazeing 12 June 1631. Married John Smith by 1658.
  4. possibly a Philip born about 1633[5]

Death

Philip died 22 October 1657.[6] It should be noted that Vital Records of Roxbury, Massachusetts reports 24 October 1657.[7]
