Notes

From Styles, p. 71-73:
Catherine Lamb...
She was married to Exum Elliott (son of Jacob Elliott and Zilpha Davenport) on 24 Mar 1790 in Randolph County, NC. Partial notes on Exum and Catherine courtesy of Billie Lee Lamb Smith, Bucklin, Kansas, 1996. Also, children's records may be found in Heiss, Vol 7, part 1, from which: Whitewater Monthly Meeting, Wayne County, "Escum Elliott b. 2-10-1765, s. Jacob & Zilpha Elliott. Katherine, b. 8-6-1774 dt. of Jacob & Sarah Lamb."
Hinshaw, Vol I, NC, pp. 676, 683, 698, "1788, 3, 19, Axum Elliott, son of Jacob and Zilpha, Randolph County, married Sarah Pearson."That places Catherine Lamb as his second wife. Page 715, Back Creek MM, "1807, 1, 31, Exum Elliott and family, and Catherine Elliott and daughters, Zilpha, Rebecca and Usley, requested certificate to Deep Creek MM."Page 985, Deep Creek MM, "1807, 4, 4, Catherine Elliott and daughters Zilpha, Rebecca and Ursula received on certificate from Back Creek MM; 1807, 9, 5, Exum and sons, Jacob, John, Elwood and Isaac, received on certificate from Back Creek MM; 1815, 9, 2, Exum and Catherine Elliott and sons & daughters granted certificate to White Water MM, Indiana.”
Exum Elliott was born on 10 Apr 1765 in Perquimans County, NC. He died on 8 Oct 1841 in West Grove, Wayne, IN. He was buried in West Grove Friends Cemetery, Wayne County, IN. Prior to his marriage to Catherine Lamb, Exum was married to Sarah Pearson on 19 March 1788 in Guilford County. Sarah died only four months later. She was the daughter of Jonathan Pearson and Sarah Bogue, who were also the parents of Nathan Pearson who married Catherine Lamb's sister, Huldah.
An undated article from the Indianapolis Star, written by former editorialist - columnist Kate Milner Rabb, was sent to me by correspondent Tim Walls 15 Nov 1999. The subject was Exum and Catherine Elliott. The article apparently is quite old, based upon additional information from Joyce Overman Bowman, a descendant of Exum and Catherine. Tim had only partial information on the author's name, so Joyce contacted the Indiana State Archives, where an archivist was familiar with the author. My thanks to both of you. Here is the text:
"I have just read the interesting article in today's Star concerning the wedding hats of Exum and Catherine Lamb Elliott, early residents of Wayne County," writes Mrs. E.B. Byrket of Knightstown, Ind. "It seems to me that the ones who have preserved these articles through all these years should be highly commended. Such things are tangible links which connect us with the dear old people of generations past. This Exum and Catherine Elliott were also my great-great grandparents, their son Isaac being my ancestor. Isaac Elliott married Rachel Overman in the year 1818 and entered government land in Grant county in 1828, where the national military home is now located. The brick house they built in later life now forms a part of the buildings there...
