Biography

This profile is part of the Ellis Name Study.

Matthias was born in 1739. He was the son of Malachi Ellis and Jane Blackwell.[1] He married Rachel Tupper at Sandwich in 1759[2] and they had nine children. The children were baptised in Sandwich, but the family later moved to Middleborough where Matthias was referred to as "junior" to differentiate from his cousin Matthias. Five of the children died there of smallpox in 1775.[3]

Matthias died sometime between the birth of his son Joshua and his wife's remarriage in 1782.[3]

Probate

His inventory was taken on 8 October 1782 in Middleborough. Nathaniel Sprague was the administrator of his estate. His estate was represented as insolvent. A list of claims and creditors was recorded. His widow, Ruth, now wife of Benjamin Haskins of Rochester received her dower. An account of his estate by Nathaniel Sprague was recorded which included the sale of real estate, necessaries to the widow, a doctor in his last sickness, and administration fees. The balance was proportioned to the creditors.[5]
