Richard isn't profiled directly in Anderson's Great Migration, but is mentioned as the spouse of Elizabeth in the profile of Elizabeth's father, William French. He is not included in Anderson's Great Migration Directory.

Biography

Richard was born in England, about 1621. He emigrated to New England, perhaps in the 1630's, perhaps in company with his mother and younger brother Joseph.

The names of the parents of Richard Ellice are unknown. John, George, Samuel and Joseph Ellice have been proposed for his father but none has been definitively proven. Respected early 20th century researcher Mary Lovering Holman reviewed the "fragmentary data" available on this family and believed Richard's unknown father likely died in England and Richard and his brother Joseph probably came to the colonies in the mid-1630s as children with their unnamed remarried mother and stepfather, Lambert Chenery/Genery[1]

He was received into First Church in Dedham, Massachusetts, January 5, 1644.[2] His wife was received into the church on June 21, 1657.[3]

Some publications claim that Richard Ellis took the oath of allegiance in London, 22 Jun 1632, before embarking for America in the ship "Lyon",[citation needed] and that he was an original proprietor of Dedham in 1636.[citation needed] However, his earliest record is a grant of land in Dedham in 1642,[citation needed] and Anderson's Great Migration series of migrants through 1635 does not profile him. (He is only mentioned in the profile of his father-in-law, William French, and there he is not notated in the style indicating a Great Migration migrant.)

He was an ensign & lieutenant; deputy 1692-1693. In 1694, he received five pounds for services as Representative to the General court.

Richard married Elizabeth French, daughter of William French, on 19 Sep 1650 in Dedham, (then) Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[4][5][6]

Spouses/Children: Richard and Elizabeth French Ellis had children, all born in Dedham:[7][8]

  • Elizabeth (23 July 1651, bp. 10 August 1651), married Benjamin Bullard
  • Sarah (23 Nov 1652, bp. 27 February 1653), no further records
  • Mary (born 3 Feb 1655, bp. 18 February 1654/5), married Amos Fisher
  • John (31 January 1656/7, bp. 8 February 1656/7), married Elizabeth Fisher
  • Hannah/Anna (15 March 1659), married Philip Searle
  • Rebecca (30 April 1661), married John Fisher
  • Eleazer (10 January 1663/4, bp. 17 January 1663/4), married Mehitable Thurston
  • Joseph (October 1666), married Mary Graves
  • Abigail (5 July 1669, bp. 11 July 1669), married Ebenezer Fisher

Richard Ellis died in Dedham on 21 October 1694. "Leut. Richard Ellice, decesed October 21, 1694.". Elizabeth died on 21 July 1697, in Dedham. "Elizebeth, wife of Leut. Richard Ellis, deceased July 21, 1697."[9]

From Source #1: The will of Lambert Genery was proved 4 Feb 1674, "mentions son John. . . . son-in-law Richard Ellis, and daughter-in-law Ruth Ellis, widow. . . "

Son-in-law seems like an odd construction. "Step-son?" If Ruth Ellis was Joseph Ellis' widow, reinforces idea that Richard and Joseph were brothers.

Ellis-3146 and Ellis-18107. These profiles don't look anything like the same person. Alice is not a dtr of the Richard being merged into. However that Alice (wife of John Eaton) is not an Ellis at all, but Unknown. I've proposed merges between the two John Ellises and the two Alices. That will leave this Richard hanging without connection and/or sources, so he might as well be merged away into a known Richard Ellis.

Re: recent merge proposal.

Richard Ellis has a daughter Alice, purported wife of John Eaton of Watertown. There is no Alice listed here as a daughter, and she is born too early to be the likely child of this profile. All of the profiles related to Ellis-18107 are unsourced. I would suggest that the merge be set as an Unmerged Match until research & sources have been applied to the related profiles of Ellis-18107 to avoid a possible conflation. I don't currently have the time to do the research, unfortunately. Would another member have the time & inclination to look into the other profile?

Along with Richard Ellis,

[Ellis-9124|Joseph Ellis] and wife Ruth Morse are both mentioned in Genery,'s will as sons in law. This would make Joseph a strong candidate to be Richard's younger brother, but only if the information as to his being born in Dedham in 1635 is incorrect.

I support the merge. The Ellice vs. Ellis confusion has been going on for decades. It makes sense how the match was overlooked, but it's time to fix! Since it's been seven years since the the profile manager has weighed in, it might make sense just to delete Ellice-4 as one of the profiles that gave GEDCOM imports such a bad name?

Looking at the Biography, if Richard was an original proprietor of Dedham in 1636 it seems his birth would have been somewhat before 1621 or 1625. Wikipedia lists three Ellises (Ellicees) as signers of the Covenant of Dedham: John Ellice #30, Richard Ellice #93, and Joseph Ellice #105. Perhaps this Richard Ellis who wed Elizabeth French, 1650, in Dedham was the son of one of these Signers. Thanks. D. Jenkins
