"Born to Wallace H. and Gene E Browning Ellis, 973 twenty-seventh street, girl."
NI210Aunt Ginger died this afternoon, 23 Nov 2010, at her farmhouse in Fish Haven, Bear Lake, Idaho. She was born 31 December 1924, the same year as Pop. It has snowed all day up there and all the schools in Bear Lake County closed; they are expecting the worst blizzard in 20 years. Plans are to have a graveside service on 4 Dec 2010 and then a "Celebration of Life" at the Alta Club.
Aunt Ginger was a fine and fun person--always very willing to listen to what a kid had to say (that was sort of scary.) She was unpredictable, throwing water and hosting crazy Anniversary Parties with brownies laced with tabasco, with themes like "Accidents", although Bob and Ginger always wore unthematic outrageous costumes. She always ran old-time movie shorts in the "movie" room of her Bear Lake house, entertaining the children after dark (I think it was her way of helping us young mothers out). When I was an older teenager and staying at Bear Lake after the season had ended, I remember hearing Otello, the opera, for the first time as I visited with her one dark evening.
She wore vivid colors, hot pink and turquoise sweaters, and was always working on the next accordian Christmas card all summer long. Friends from San Diego visited the wilds of Fish Haven occasionally; it seemed that to them she was a VIP, a famous artist, on the board of the Museum of Man etc. And occasionally when she attended a party, she put on a wig and make-up and transformed into a movie star, complete with all the body language, glamour and charm.
She loved her dogs, cutting George with fingernail scissors, feeding Phred carrots and recounting mad tales of his exploits. My Mama remembers her first dog, Windy?, and did he bite? Everything was always sensational when Ginger was involved, including conversation. She talked with her hands, her eyes, her whole self. I remember the party the children threw at the Matthew Sandefur Browning Theatre at Union Station for Aunt Gene and Josh (Blanche) when they were 90 and 85 years old. Ginger and Bob had brought dozens of huge clay banks from Tiajuana and the whole place looked like a grand fiesta.
Whenever we went to San Diego, the Wallaces were always ready to have us stay, come over for breakfast, take us to Tijuana and to their favorite Mexican restaurant. Ginger published two books of her illustrations, and I am still wearing some of her enamel jewelry from her time at the Art Institute of Chicago that I am lucky enough to have inherited from Mama.
Aunt Ginger didn't like to fly, so Bob and Janet ferried her across country by car every year (and that way she could bring horse trailers full of supplies too!) She spent time being a good neighbor, photographed and visited with her Fish Haven neighbors, and appreciated their stories. (I think she wrote a book and illustrated it with her photos in order to complete a class or degree at Utah State.) She was a loving mother and loyal and loving daughter. Her family took such good care of her in Fish Haven, traveling up from Salt Lake and from Richmond, sitting with her and helping her all summer and fall; she inspired great love. One summer, she let me have free reign of the new garage that they built, along with all sorts of different photographic chemicals, and let me make enlargements of negatives that I think she had developed in Logan for me. She was always very encouraging of any artistic endeavor I had embarked upon. She wasn't a usual, bossy adult; she was always so fun. I have all good memories of Aunt Ginger.
