Charles Ellis known as Charlie was the son of Edmund Lewis Ellis and Annie Stent.
He was a member of the Nelson 10th Mounted Rifles.
Charlie enlisted during WWI serial no 40443, rank Private, and embarked with the Specialist Company, Machine Gun Section - 24th Reinforcements. His ship, the Pakeha left Wellington April 26, 1917 bound for Plymouth, England.
His unit proceeded to France, October 19, 1917. In late February 1918 Charlie was admitted to a field hospital after been gassed and was subsequently moved to other hospitals in France and England. His mother Annie was sent notification that her son had been hospitalised.
Charlie returned to New Zealand on the ship NZ Waimana on June 23 1919 arriving in Auckland. Charlie Ellis had served overseas for 2 years and received his discharge on 23 July 1919. Exposure to the Mustard Gas continued to affect his health.
He married Gertrude Stroud of Kent, England in 1923 at Takaka. They had 1 child in their marriage, a daughter Janet Olive.
Charlie first worked as an Electrician in Takaka for the Golden Bay Cement Co and post war as a Cycle Dealer. He transferred the lease of the Cycle shop in 1926and next worked as an Engineer and lastly a Mechanic. Charlie built one of the first radios in Takaka.
He died age 50 and is buried at Rototai cemetery, Takaka. BLK B I I, PLOT 35. Probate of Charlie Ellis' Will 28 August 1946 at Wellington.[1]
