Margaret was born in Dublin, Ireland, on July 30, 1868. She was the daughter of William Ellis and Elizabeth Evans. She was baptized at No 1 North City, City of Dublin, Ireland (No date on record). Her family relocated to Liverpool, Lancashire, England. She was enumerated in the 1881 census as a thirteen year old residing with her parents and four siblings at 33 Nursery Street, Liverpool. Her father was a "Boiler Maker".
Margaret married William Ballard in 1887. The ceremony was performed on September 21st in Liverpool at All Saints. The Parish Register listed Margaret as a nineteen year old spinster residing at 26 Virgil Street. Her father was named as William Ellis (deceased) "Boiler Maker". William was a twenty year old bachelor and "Oil Miller" residing at 21 Collingwood Street. His father was named as John Ballard (deceased) "Cooper".
