NOTES: Text: Statement executed in Orange Co, NC and recorded in Kent Co MD,Chancery Court Record Vol B63p 886; dated 14 Sep 1770: "NorthCarolina - On the twelfth day of September, Orange County,Anno, Domini seventeen hundred and seventy, came Mary Ellisbefore me the subscriber and made oath upon The Evangelists of Almighty God that she was sister to Henry Clark of Kent County and province of Maryland and the widow of William Ellis son of John who left the said County of Kent about twenty years ago and that he the said William Ellis died Intestate inTyron a County in the Province aforesaid on the twenty eight day of December seventeen hundred and sixty one, and the said deponent at the same time did also depose and say thatJohn Ellis was eldest son and heir to the said William Ellis and that she was informed and verily believed that the said John lived in Tyron County on Kings Creek of the first named Province and that he had there lived for the last one year past.John McGill, J.P.. John was born 29 July 1661, died Feb/Mar 1719 in Kent Co, MD. Will records show that William's father and brother Thomas were deceased in 1719 and his oldest brother Benjamin was deceased in 1720. J.D. Ellis believed that these were victims of the Great Smallpox Epidemic of that area." William Ellis was a carpenter, like his father and brother Benjamin. One of his landmark structures was St. Andrew's Chapel in Sudlersville,Queen Anne's County, which was completed in 1730 for a fee of 21,000lb of tobacco. See also:
