Biography

This profile is part of the Ellis Name Study.

No evidence has been found as yet that Stephen Ellis had a son named James. Calling Stephen the father of James Ellis is based on current DNA matches. Perhaps Stephen had a brother from whom we descend. This relationship is still under investigation. [1]

At the 1850 census for Victor, Ontario, Stephen is 77 and his wife Jane is 66. Also living in the home are John, age 40, Caroline age 36, Silas age 9 and James age 7. This James is too young to be our James, but common names do run in families. John M. Ellis later had a son named Arthur, another name found in our family. John M. Ellis moved to Michigan, just like our James M. One of my DNA matches descends from Silas Ellis. Another of my DNA matches descends from Stephen and John M. Ellis.[2]

In every census so far located, James said he was a farmer, born in New York.[3] [4][5] He said his parents were both born in Maryland.[6]

When James married Charlotte Byer, she was 16 and he was 33 years old.

James registered for the Civil War draft at the 4th Congressional District of Michigan, on 27 August 1863 at the age of 42. He is listed as a white farmer, born in New York.[7] At this time he was a married father of three. On the same page is listed a Laurence R. Ellis, age 37, a white farmer born in New York.[8] Is this possibly a brother or cousin of James?

Research Notes

I noticed you're looking for an older James Ellis. In the city directory for NY City in 1829-1830 there is a James Ellis [1], reed cutter, rear 93 Columbia (street). There is also a Stephen Ellis on the same page, but a different address.

Stephen apparently sold and bought a lot of land in Oneida County, NY. There are records of several of these transactions at https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/G4WR-1Z4. Sometimes it helps to study the persons who bought or sold land from a family, since this can reveal relationships. Fetterly-28 00:51, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
