Biography

This profile is part of the Ellis Name Study.

George was born in Northam, Devon, England in 1804.[1]He died in 1874 at the age of 86. [2]

In 1826, he married Ellen McArthur. George Ellis, jun, bachelor, Bideford shipyard Lot 12 was married after proclamation of banns to Ellen McArthur, spinster of the same township in 1826, C of E St. Eleanor's records.

He is probably the George Ellis who purchased 100 acres of land in Lot 12, in September 1827.

George was in the 1841 census in Lot 12, a ship-builder, with a household of 10: 9 born on the Island and 1 in England. They were all Church of England. 3 males and 5 females under 16; one male and one female between the ages of 16 and 45.

In 1847, George Ellis purchased land from Neil McArthur in Lot 13. (Land conveyance records, vol 57 (467))

George established his ship-yard at Ellis Point, Bideford, Lot 12. The Alma, a barque of 356 tons, was built in 1854 at Port Hill by George Ellis. His son-in-law and nephew Bobby Ellis took over his shipyard.

The History of the Ellis Family says they had children Robert, Neil, Penrose, Lavinia, Elizabeth, Zena, and Annie. The PEI Baptismal Index lists Ann Yeo, Anna (or Hannah) Penrose, Bridget Lavinia, Ellen Ezina, Maria, Neil, William and Robert Henry.

Research Notes

According to the History of the Ellis Family by Preston Ellis, George married Bridget McArthur. However, there is no marriage record for George and Bridget, and all of the baptismal records for this family were under George and Ellen or Eleanor. They did name one daughter Bridget - however, while none of George's children named a daughter Bridget, they all had a daughter Eleanor, after their mother. Bridget seems to be a typo in the book. Preston may have mixed up the daughter Bridget with her mother.

Also possible that Eleanor was the daughter of Neil McArthur and Bridget Roche, and Preston Ellis mixed up Eleanor with her own mother.
