Mary Ellis was born at Bausley House, Coedway, in 1839, the daughter of William Ellis and his wife Ann (Clemson). When Mary was about six years old, her mother died, and her father was subsequently married to Jane Fletcher. By the time of the 1851 Census, Mary Ellis and three of her brothers were living with their step-mother (Jane Ellis) at a place called Hadnall Wood Farm.
Mary's father died in 1860, and at the time of the Census of the following year Mary and Emma Ellis were living at the Claremont Street Vaults in Shrewsbury.
Sometime in the 1860's Mary emigrated to Australia, and was living with or near her younger brother, Sam Ellis and his wife. In 1871 Mary married John Hunter Thompson. For some years Mary was the Mining Registrar in the Mitta Mitta district, and is mentioned in numerous newspaper articles relating to mining claims, etc..
Mary died at Mitta Mitta in 1905
