Biography

This profile is part of the Ellis Name Study.

Stephen was born May 22, 1822 in New York. He married Betsy Nickerson Young on November 4, 1847. He died at sea in 1851 and they had no children.

Notes

found on 1850 Harwich Census with wife Betsy.They are living with Prince Young, age 45, mariner, property $300, and his wife Betsy, age 40.This is her mother's brother. Their children are Prince M., age 16, Mariner, James M., 11, Levi M., 9, Lydia M., age 7, Betsy, age 4 and Rosetta, age 2- Stephen's death was by drowning and James Young is included on the list as death by drowning at age 11. Thomas Burgess, son of Joshua and Hope is also on this list as are three sons of Jonathan Eldredge and Rebecca Wixon. Josiah Eldredge on my tree is listed as having died on October 6, 1851.There are fifteen on the list. Most of these are listed as having been lost off the Grand Banks so it must have been a terrible storm.
