On July 31, 1769, Joseph Cobb owned 100 acres on the Catawba River, in Craven Co., SC--land that had originally been granted to Benjamin Ellison Feb. 19, 1767. Rachel had adjoining land, and is probably the Rachael who married Joseph.
State of Georgia, Wilkes County, Recorded June 7, 1796; transcribed from p. 68-70, on May 12, 1853. Officially states that Rachel Cobb, remarried widow of Joseph Cobb,"became possessed" of 200 acres on Briar Creek as a dower for her marriage to William McCullars. It goes on to say that Ezekial Cobb, son of Joseph and Rachel Cobb, gave William and Rachel 15 pounds for the property. Joseph and Ezekial were in the same Rev. War company of Capt. John Hill at Fort Martin, GA commanded by Col Elijah Clarke. They were both given 287.5 acres for the Rev. War service. Rachael may have been married before marrying Joseph Cobb. She is thought to have been the widow of Benjamin Ellis. Benjamin Ellis and Rachael, his wife, sold the land where the spring was located to Joseph, or he got it through an intermarriage with Rachael. After Joseph Cobb died, she married William McCullers, and it is known she out lived him. In 1791 he is listed on the Tax Returns, but after that only the Widow McCullers is listed as paying taxes on the same lands.
