Biography

Mary Jane was the daughter of Peter Ellis and Catherine Hall of Cornwall.

She became the 2nd wife of James McQuade (widower) of Ireland in 1858, at Point Henry License School in Geelong.

Mary Jane raised a family of 9 children of her own and the surviving daughter, Jane of James first marriage.

In the early 1860's Mary, James and their children sailed to New Zealand on the ship 'Gothenberg' arriving in Otago.

Husband James was keen to rush to the goldfields as they were being discovered. Eventually her family settled at Livingstone and James took up farming.

Mary Jane died in 1885 age 51.

The Ellis family emigrated on the Shand from Portland to Victoria, departing on the 27th October 1854 and arriving on 20th January 1855, parents Peter 49, and Catherine age 47 are listed on p81 along with daughter Catherine age 6, and an unnamed infant born during the trip. The older children Thomas 17, Peter 15, Mary 20 and Elizabeth 16 are listed on page 82, the boys as Ag Laborers, on own account and the girls as Dom servants, with parents^[1]
