Biography

Robert was a Friend (Quaker)
U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Robert Ellyson II was a Virginia colonist.

Gerard Robert Ellyson's (also called "Robert") first known record appearance is Feb. 1700 when he signs a certificate of marriage at the New Kent Co. VA. Quaker Monthly Meeting. He and wife Sarah seem to have moved to Henrico Co. VA. The Chickahominy Swamp is the boundary between New Kent Co. VA. & Henrico Co. VA. Sarah Ellyson first shows in the Quaker Minutes of Henrico Co. VA. in Apr. 1703. The Quaker Minutes also show Gerard had received his father's lady slave Tamar. Gerard Robert Ellyson is credited with having 151 ac. at Chickahominy Swamp(Creek)in Henrico Co. VA. but there is evidence he had additional land. In 1702 he was one of the representatives of the Friends Virginia Yearly Meeting. The Ellysons attended both the Henrico and New Kent(Black Creek)Quaker Monthly Meetings. The Friends appointed Gerard overseer of the poor. He and Sarah also provided lodgings for traveling Friends. In 1720 he was named treasurer of the Henrico Meeting. In 1735 & 1736 Gerard helped his neighbors Giles Carter and others with property line processions. Gerard was continually fined by the Anglican State Church for refusing to pay tithes (the priest's wages). In 1734 the Quaker Minutes recorded that Gerard was "..the pillar of the church at Black Creek". The same records indicate he died in 1749 (42 years before freedom of religion). The children of Gerard Robert Ellyson, II, & wife Sarah according to the Quaker records were: 1) Robert Ellyson, md. Sarah Crew. 2) Agatha Ellyson, md. John Crew, Jr. 3) Hannah Ellyson, md. Andrew Crew. 4) William Ellyson, md. Agness Johnson. 5) Elizabeth Ellyson, md. John Johnson & moved later to Amelia Co. VA. 6) Judith Ellyson, md. James Lead. 7) Cecilia Ellyson, md. Thomas Elmore. 8) Ursulah Ellyson, md. William Ladd. The above written by Dennis Stewart(16676).

Research Notes

Adjusting estimated birth date to accommodate for birth of (probable) eldest son, Robert, who married in 1714. No notes seen that state the marriage certificate signed by Gerrard Robert in 1700 was his own, probably he was a witness. One source states the children had been born before Gerrard and Sarah embraced the Quaker states, thus the reason their births are not found recorded in Quaker records. In any case, if Robert were born after a 1700 marriage between his parents, he could not be marrying himself at age 13 or 14 in 1714. This writer has, for the time being, estimated son Robert's birth at 1696 at the latest, based on date of his marriage, and adjusted Gerrard Robert's to accommodate that timeline. Hoping more documentation will be found to provide clarity to this timeline.

Regarding the enslaved women on this profile: The biography text mentions an enslaved woman named Tamar inherited from his father. No source is provided. Has this Tamar been confused with the Tamar born when Gerrard Robert was an old man, who was eventually given by his widow, Sarah, to their eldest son, Robert? Or are there actually two Tamars? Labeling elder and younger for now.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:

As a member of the US Black Heritage Project, I have added a list of the slaves owned by Gerrard Robert Ellyson II on this profile with categories using the standards of the US Black Heritage Exchange Program. This helps us connect enslaved ancestors to their descendants. See the Heritage Exchange Portal for more information.

Hi! I "unlocked" this profile (removed PPP). PPP stands for "project-protected profile" and must be supported by a project as manager. I reviewed the profile and its changes, and do not believe that it needs to be either PPP or managed by a project. If you think the profile should be managed by the US Southern Colonies Project, please fill out the Management Request Form (see the link, here).

Cheers, Liz

Marriage in 1714 is most assuredly wrong: all of the children are born starting in 1701. The bio shows a marriage date of 28 Apr 1700.

Should Ellyson-39 have Virginia Quaker category added? Also New Kent MM and Henrico MM Categories could also be added.
If this Gerrard Ellyson resided in New Kent, VA in 1782 (per this profile's source #9 reference), he could not have died in 1749.
Ellyson-39 and Ellyson-197 appear to represent the same person because: same person
Ellyson-155 and Ellyson-39 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate

This profile is married to his son Robert's wife. It appears the son Robert was merged into the father Gerrard Robert.

I've set up a clean up project for the Ellyson line. I hope this will get the ball rolling.

I'd say go ahead and correct things, Michelle. This has been discussed, but no action taken yet. I don't have access to the sources.

The spouse should be Sarah Spence. There are three generations of Gerard Robert Ellyson in this family. Sarah Crew married the son Gerard Robert born 1690 who isn't attached here as a son. The three generations are all jumbled up with wrong spouse and children attachments.
