When Cleon Elmer was born on May 25, 1802, in Buckland, Massachusetts, his father, Gad, was 41 and his mother, Anna, was 39. He married Emily Clark on January 1, 1827, in his hometown. They had nine children in 20 years. He died on February 27, 1878, in Juab County, Utah, having lived a long life of 75 years, and was buried in Nephi, Utah.
Cleon was the second youngest in this large family of eight boys and three girls, born on the 25th of May 1802 in Buckland, Franklin, Massachusetts, United States [3][4][5][7][8][9][10][11][6]
Marriage
Sometime around 1826 Cleon met the young, teen-aged girl Emily Clark from nearby Buckland. She was the daughter of Jonathan and Phoebe Ellis Clark. Emily never knew her father because he died in the very year of her birth in 1809 at the young age of thirty-three. She was an only child and like Cleon was forced to grow up without one of her parents. Though Cleon was seven years older than Emily they fell in love and married on New Year’s Day, 1827, in Buckland. [3][4][12][13][14][15]
Though photographs of the couple are not known to exist, Emily may have looked like her first daughter, Fanny, who was described as being “about five feet six inches in height; slender; pretty; with brown hair and eyes. [16]

Church History
Cleon grew up in a religious environment with his father Gad leading the way. According to Kellar Fox, Gad’s “spiritual guides were numerous compared to the books owned by most people of his time. He owned two Bibles, a testament, and a published sermon on conversion to the Christian life by the famous 17th century English Puritan minister, Richard Baxter. Part of Gad’s evening ritual, after the meal and the chores, would probably have been to light a candle, put on his spectacles and read from the Bible or Baxter’s “Call to the Unconverted.” [20]
Occupation
Cleon’s father Gad, along with his three younger brothers, worked with his father Samuel on the farmland that Samuel had purchased upon returning to Franklin County, but he also continued to work the blacksmith trade throughout his entire life. They worked at the forge with hammer and anvil, iron and steel, shoeing horses and creating tools and implements for nearby farm families. [21]

Cleon died on 27 February 1878 in Chicken Creek, Juab, Utah, United States and was buried in Nephi City Cemetery in Nephi, Juab, Utah, United States. [22][23][24][25][26][6]
