Biography

When Eliakim Elmer was born on April 30, 1764, in Sharon, Connecticut, his father, David, was 39 and his mother, Jemima, was 33. He married Lois Merrill on January 18, 1789, in his hometown. They had seven children in 22 years. He died on April 12, 1834, in Le Roy, New York, at the age of 69.
Col. [Samuel] Elmer told them they did not spell the name right; that it was not Elmer, but Elmore. The old gentleman would never change, but the boys ever after wrote it Elmore, according to his granddaughter Julia C. (Elmore) Hulbert.
