Biography

Jacob was born about 1770. [1] Jacob is person 135 in this reference, found on pp.103-104.

According to this reference, Jacob appears to be descended from the line of Elstons that were founding settlers of the Woodbridge township in New Jersey, ca. 1670's. Jacob's father is unknown but was thought to be either one of the four known sons of Peter, b.ca. 1696 in Woodbridge or one of the four known sons of Benjamin, b. before 1713 in Woodbridge.

Jacob lived for a time in Onondaga, Co. and Saratoga Co., N.Y., but had moved to Romulus, Michigan, possibly by 1827, as he and his wife, Freelove, had purchased parts of a cemetery lot in Onondaga Co. in 1818, and sold parts in 1820, 1824, and 1827.

Jacob passed away in 1848. There is mention in the James S. Elston reference of the settlement of his estate, from which the names of his widow, Freelove, and three children are known.

Research Notes

According to this source (James Strode Elston), "Jacob and Benjamin owned lots next to each other a little north of west of Camillus Village in Onondaga Co., N.Y. and because of their ages, it appears they were brothers. The first trace found of Jacob is the 1800 census of Chariton, Saratoga Co., N.Y., when he was 26-45, there were two women 16-26 and a girl and a boy under 10. A brief personal check of the Satatoga Co. records both at Ballston Spa and Saratoga Springs disclosed no trace of the family, unless they were related in some way to William Ellison or George Elliston (Ellison) of App. I. In the 1810 census of Onondaga Co., he was given as Jacob Alston over 45 (born before 1765), his wife as 26-45, with a son 10-16, one under 10, and a dau. 10-16. In the 1820 census, he was given as over 45 with wife over 45, with males 10-16 and 16-26 and two females 16-26."

In the entry for Jacob's presumed brother Benjamin (person 137 in that work, p. 106), James Strode Elston expresses belief, without proof, that Benjamin (and thus Jacob) was the son of Peter (person 50, p. 71), grandson of Peter (person 13, p. 52) and great-grandson of Peter (person 3, p. 40).
