Biography

Mary (Elwell) Dolliver Gardner was the daughter of Robert Elwell and Joane ---.^[1] Anderson asserts that she born "say 1634",^[2] so she could have been born in England prior to 1634, when her parents emigrated, or she could have been born shortly after their arrival in America. No documents have been found.

Some allege that Mary could have been one of the two unnamed children of Robert Elwell who were baptized at Salem, Massachusetts on 28 Aug 1639,^[3] however, Anderson maintains those two children are Robert's sons, Samuel and Josiah.^[2]

Mary married first to Samuel Dolliver on 15 Aug 1654 in Gloucester, Massachusetts.^[2][4] They had the following children:^[1][5]

• Samuel, b. July 9, 1658;
• Mary, b.March 26, 1662;
• Richard, b April 18, 1665;
• Sarah, b. Dec. 24, 1667;
• John, b. Sept. 2, 1671.

After Samuel's death, Mary married James Gardner^[2] shortly before he died on or about 8 Dec 1684.^[6] There is some confusion over their marriage date as Gloucester Vital Records has James dying on 8 Dec 1684 and their marriage on 16 Dec 1684.^[4] Rev. Thomas Elwell doesn't mention this marriage at all in his work^[1] and Anderson only lists the 16 Dec 1684 marriage date.^[2]

A Mary Gardner died on 29 Sep 1708 in Gloucester, Massachusetts.^[4] It is unknown if she is the same person as this Mary Elwell Dolliver Gardner.

Questionable Children

Joseph Dolaber and Dorothy Dolliver were previously linked as children of Samuel Dolliver and Mary Elwell. However, there was no supporting documentation and Joseph's and Dorothy's birth dates were too close to Mary Elwell's for her to be the mother, so they were detached as her children.
