Freeman was born about 1845.

Freeman enlisted as a private in the army, Co. I. 20th Regiment Infantry, Maine Volunteers, on 8 Aug 1862[3] during the Civil War. He was killed in action on 30 Sep 1864.[4]

He is buried in Poplar Grove National Cemetery, Dinwiddie County, Virginia.[5] Find A Grave: Memorial #75932050 states he was killed in the Battle of Peebles’ Farm.
