Thomas Elwell was born on 11 Sep. 1751 at Salem, Salem Co., New Jersey. [1]
He married Elizabeth Bryan, daughter of Henry "Richard" Bryan and Rachel (Lanham) Bryan, in Dec. 1786 at Frederick Co., Maryland, USA. [1][2][3]
Thomas was one of the few Revolutionary War veterans to have kept his discharge papers. These were filed in 1818 by his attorney William H. Beard in Washington D. C. in order to obtain a land warrant promised to him as a result of his enlistment in the service to the end of the war. On 1 Aug 1818 a 100-acre land warrant was issued to Thomas for his faithful service as a matross in the Corps of Artillery Artificers of the Pennsylvania Line. This land was Lot 1, Sec. 3, Twp 9-N, Range 12-W of the U. S. Military Tract (located in Pike Twp., Knox County).[1]
He began receiving a pension on 9 June 1818 for service in the Pennsylvania Continental Army. [4]
He appeared on the census of 1820 at Pike Twp., Knox Co., Ohio.[5]
Thomas died on 21 May 1825 at Mount Vernon, Knox Co., Ohio, at age 73.[1]
