Biography

Josiah Elwell, son of Robert Elwell and Joane ---, was born about 1638, probably at Dorchester, Massachusetts and is likely one of the "2 ch. of Rob[er]t Elwell" that were baptized on 28 Aug 1639 at Salem, Massachusetts.^[1][2] Josiah may be the "Second child" that Rev. Jacob Elwell referred to in his work,^[3] as no record of a 1644 birth has been found.

Robert Elwell married Mary Collins on 15 June 1666 in Gloucester.^[1][4][5] Robert and Mary had 5 children, as follows:^[3]

• Dorcas, b.18 Jun 1686 m.John Babson;
• Elias, b.16 Oct 1668;
• Nehemiah, b.21 Dec 1671;
• William, b.5 Jul 1674;
• Josiah II, b.21 Dec 1676, d.5 Dec 1716.

Josiah's date and place of death is unknown. His widow remarried in 1679^[1] and again in 1693.^[3]
