Samuel Elwell was born on 14 March 1660 in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He was the son of Samuel Elwell and Esther Dutch. [1] His mother's name appears as Hester Duck in Massachusetts Vital and Town Records. [2]
He sold to Samuel Bishop of Ipswich July 15, 1684, his house and land willed to him by his grandfather, Robert Elwell, Sr. and may be believed to have been living in 1695, when his father is called Senior in a deed. [3]
He married Sarah Wheeden of Connecticut. Her name is sometimes spelled Wheadon. [4] Their children include:

He died in Branford, New Haven, Connecticut. His will was in probate in 1736 in Hartford, Connecticut. [6]
