Biography

Samuel was born in 1713. He is the son of Samuel Ely and Jane Lord. In 1739, he married Hannah Marsh, daughter of Ebenezer Marsh and his wife, ______ Parsons. Their family consisted of ten children. They lived at North Lyme, Conn.

Children of Samuel Ely and Hannah Marsh : —

1. Samuel C. Ely, b. Nov. 6, 1740 in Lyme; d. 1795; m. Beulah Billings.

2. Elijah, b. May 8, 1743 in Lyme; d. Mar. 24, 1799; m. Feb. 14, 1765, Hepzibah Lee.

3. Hannah, b. May 28 or 26, 1745 in Lyme; d. 1820; m. July 27, 1766, Deacon George Elliot, of Killingworth.

4. Mary, b. 1747; d. Dec. 10, 1751.

5. Abner (twin), b. 1749; d. Jan. 2, 1805; m. 1779, Bridget Brockway.

6. Mary 2nd (twin), b. 1749; d. Oct. 9, 1829; m. 1767, Thos. Anderson.

7. Lois, b. 1751 ; married, first, Captain Ezra Selden, who was her third cousin, oldest son of Ezra Selden and Elizabeth Rogers; and second. Rev. Ezra Halleck, is buried at Mattituck, Long Island.

8. Elizabeth, b. 1754; d. May 2, 1791 ; m. Apr. 17, 1777, Abraham Perkins.

9. Jerusha, b. 1756; d. July 12, 1833; m. Captain Richard Williams, of Saybrook.

10. Marsh, b. 1761; d. Nov. 2, 1835; m. Sally Warren, who died July 28, 1838.

Note. — Mr. Moses Beach numbered Lois Ely as the ninth child, and this order has been followed in the record; but it is believed by the Editor that Lois was the seventh child and not the ninth.

Samuel Ely was representative from Lyme to the General Court many times from 1757 to 1760. (Pub. Records of Conn., Vol. XL, pages 2, 57, 91, 303, 348, 367, 371, 498, etc.). He was commissioned Lieutenant of the third company or trainband in Lyme in October, 1750, and Captain of the same in October, 1755, succeeding Captain Samuel Selden in this position. He was also justice of the peace in May, 1749, and was held in high esteem by his neighbors and townsmen. (See Public' Records of Conn., 1744-50, pages 417, 555.) [1]
