Biography

Tabitha Ely, Lyme, Conn., b. about 1760, d. 1852, dau. of Richard Ely and Mary Pearson ; m. 1772, Jedediah Peck, Burlington, N. Y., b. 1748, d. 1 82 1, son of Elijah Peck and Hepsibah Pearson. Their children : —

1. Hepzibah (Hepsibah), b. 27 Jan., 1774, at Lyme, d.1860. She m. her fourth cousin, Abel Sill, eldest son of Andrew Sill and Helen Talcott Dorn of Burlington, N. Y.[1]

2. Mary (Polly), b. 6 Nov., 1776, at Lyme. She m. 7 Jan., 1802, David Willard, b. 29 Jan., 1775, son of David Willard and Martha Sherlock. He was a farmer, and they settled at Burlington, N. Y., and in 1806 removed to Otisco, N. Y., where he was a justice of the peace for twenty years, and was a member of the legislature in 1826. He d. 20 Feb., 1826, at Otisco, where she d. 23 June, 1856. Their children: A. Electa; m. Ebenezer Jennings, of Otisco.; B. Amanda, m. James Churchill, of Spafiford, New York.; C. Tabitha, m. Frederick Churchill, of Spafiford, N. Y. [2]

3. Elijah, b. 29 Aug., 1780, at Lyme, d. 20 Sept., 1780.

4. Elijah 2d, b. i Oct., 1781, at Lyme. He m. Clarissa or Lucy Bates of Hartwick, N. Y., and removed to Sheffield, O., where he died.Their children: Richard Ely; . Erastus; Jedediah; Elisha; Elijah; Clarissa; David W.; Emmeline.[3]

5. Peter, b. 12 Nov., 1783, at Lyme. He m. 1809, Sarah Lewis Colgrove (13357) Pownal Vt,, who was b. 1789, d. 1861, dau. of Christopher Colgrove and Eleanor Lewis. Their children : Elijah; Mary, b. 1811; m. 1838, Daniel Campbell; Esther, b. 1813; m. 1833, John Kitchell; Peter; Sarah; Sarah Ann, b. 1823; d. 1881; m. 1845, Lewis Wells. They removed to Ashtabula Co., O., where he died 1826. [4]

6. Anna, b. 27 May, 1786, at Lyme; died, unm.1815

7. Jedediah, b. 19 May, 1788, at Lyme. He m. Sarah (Lewis) Peck, the widow of his brother Peter, in Wayne Co., O., where he died, 1844. They had one child: Tabitha Ely Peck, b. 1829; m. 1859, Avery David Martin. [5]

VI. JUDGE JEDEDIAH PECK (1982), born at Lyme, Conn., 28 Jan., 1748, fourth son of Elijah Peck and Hepzibah Pearson, was a great grandson of Elizabeth Hyde of the third generation. He m. 5 Nov., 1772, his first cousin, Tabitha Ely (1995), youngest dau. of Richard Ely and Mary Pearson. He was a farmer and they settled at Lyme, where he also pursued the business of a land surveyor. They removed to Burlington, N. Y., when the country was yet a wilderness, where he became a prominent politician and wrote many political articles for the public papers over the signature of "Jedediah Peck, the plow jogger." He was frequently elected to the house of assembly, and was also a member of the state senate. He was also a judge of the court of common pleas of Otsego Co. many years. In the war of 1812, although exempt by age and otherwise from the performance of militia duty, to induce others to turn out for the defense of the Niagara frontier, he volunteered his services, and participated in the battle of Queenston, where the British general Brock was killed. He and his wife both died at Burlington, N. Y.[6]

Peck Cemetery Burlington, Otsego County, New York, USA. The memorial death date is unclear, listed as January 14, 185?, at the age of 97 years and 10 months, suggesting a birth date in the 1750s.[8]

Peck-4356 and Ely-1099 appear to represent the same person because: Peck is married name, not maiden name. Lots of sourcing with same 'duplicated' spouse on both records, same death
