Nicholas and Mary moved to America in search of religious freedom. They moved from Alsace-Lorraine where Nicholas remembered living through the war between Germany and France as a non-resistant young man. In 1895 the Engel family sold all and borded a ship with the clothes on their back and two full trunks. En route they came through a storm so severe the children could not stay in their beds. In Philadelphia, PA or just before they landed PA their son John became sick and died. Nicolas spoke German and French but never learned English.
