Biography

Anna Ilsabe Sophia Luise Engel was born 18 Oct 1820 in Passee, Mecklenburg, Prussia. Her parents were Jacob Engel and Caroline Brandt. She was baptized 22 Oct 1820 in Passee.[1]

On 26 October 1838, Anna married Johann Henry August Manzelmann in Passee, Mecklenburg, Germany.[2]

John and Anna had eight children, all born in Steinhagen, Mecklenburg, Prussia and baptised at the Lutheran church in Passee:

  1. "Charlotte" Johanna Maria Sophia Elisabeth Wilhelmine Friederick Manzelmann was born 15 Aug 1839 and baptised 18 Aug 1839. [3]
  2. "Mina" Wilhelmine Sophia Caroline Luise Friederike Conredie Manzelmann was born 11 Oct 1841, baptized 17 Oct 1841.[4]
  3. Hermann Freiderich Heinrich Theodor Manzelmann was born 22 Feb 1844, baptized 1 Mar 1844.[5]
  4. Sophia Maria Friederike Johanna Christiane Manzelmann was born 6 Nov 1846 and baptised 15 Nov 1846.[6]
  5. Carl Charles Johann Friedrich Christian Theodor Manzelmann was born 13 Jan 1851 and baptized 26 Jan 1851.[7]
  6. Anna Maria Sophia Manzelmann was born 31 May 1852, baptized 8 Jun 1852.[8]
  7. "Mary" Maria Catharine Manzelmann was born 3 Aug 1856 and baptized on 7 Aug 1856.[9]
  8. "John" Jochim Johann Friedrich Manzelmann was born 30 Jan 1859 and baptized 6 Feb 1859[10]

John and Anna along with five of their children (Sophia, Carl, Anna, Mary and Jochim) arrived in New York City on 23 May 1867 aboard the ship, "Eugenie." [11]Two of their children, Herman and Charlotte, had arrived the year before.[12]Mina came over with her husband and daughter in 1865.

In the 1870 US Census, John and Anna were living in Moulton, Auglaize county, Ohio with four of their children: Herman, "Charles"(Carl), Mary and "Joseph" (John). John is a Farm Laborer. Their last name is misspelled as "Meuselman."[13] In the 1880 Census, John and Anna are with their son, John, in the same place of Moulton, Auglaize county, Ohio.[14]

John died 18 May 1881 in Auglaize county, Ohio at the age of 64.[15] Anna died 17 June 1891 in Moulton, Auglaize, Ohio and was buried in Zion Cemetery. She was 70 years old. [16]
