Peter Whittenberg and his wife Mary Polly Earnest brought their family to Greene County, Missouri, and were among the first to settle in Case Township. A portion of the township in an area extending from south of Cave Springs up to Walnut Grove was called Whittenberg Prairie, so named for Peter Whittenberg. Their large log house was built in the Cave Springs area, not far from Walnut Grove, in the northwest corner of the county. According to the Greene County History by Holcombe, "When the first settlements were made in this township the pioneers often shot deer from their own door-yards. Wolves were very plenty and gave the settlers no little trouble by carrying off their sheep and pigs." At the present time we are unsure of the exact year Peter and Mary came to Missouri. Some researchers say 1833 and 1834. Their daughter, Lavina was married in Tennessee on February 2, 1832 to Jesse Kelley, which would place the family still in Tennessee at that time. We have record of Tennessee land sales by Peter in March and September of 1834. On October 11, 1835, his daughter, Polly Ann, was married in Greene County, Missouri to Archabald Morris, so it would seem they left Tennessee sometime between September 1834 and October 1835.
