Colonel Alexander Erwin (aka Irwin) was born February 12, 1749, in Bucks county, Pennsylvania, and migrated to Rowan county, North Carolina. By the time of the American Revolutionary War, Burke county had been created from n Rowan county. Alexander too the Oath of Allegiance for land entry in Rowan county, in 1778. He served as an officer during the Revolution, first as a Captain, under the command of Colonel McDowell, eventually achieving the rank of Colonel, himself. [1]

Colonel Alexander Irwin is honored for his service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Their records indicate that he died October 15, 1829, in Morganton, Burke county, North Carolina. He married 1) Sarah Ann Robinson and 2) Cynthia Margaret Crawford Patton. Application for membership in the DAR have been made by his son, James Irwin, who married Margaret Locke Phifer; and his daughters, Mary Erwin, who married John McKamey Wilson; Harriet Dorcas Erwin, who married John Agnew Erwin and Catherine Irwin, who married John Agnew Erwin; Cythia Erwin, who married Stephen Fox; and Margaret Erwin, who married Hugh Tate.

Colonel Erwin died June 20, 1830, in Morganton, Burke County, North Carolina, and is buried in the Quaker Meadows Cemetery. [2] There is a photograph of his headstone on his memorial, which may be viewed here: https://images.findagrave.com/photos/2016/257/19427788_1473882903.jpg
