Biography

Solomon was born about 1717. Several early court documents in Northampton County , Virginia identify Solomon and his family. The will of John Esham names his son Daniel and the "other children." When Daniel died in 1743 he left a will naming his wife Garbary and brothers Jonathan and Solomon. [1] [2] Two later court records also help to identify Solomon. His brother John Esham had become Solomon's guardian but Solomon Esham filed a complaint against his guardian John Esham in 1736 over payment for a horse. In 1738 he again went to court and made a motion that he be put upon the list of tithables. If it is assumed Solomon had reached legal age and no longer needed a guardian then he was 21 and born 1717 or before.[3] [4]

The 1729 tax list for Northampton County, Virginia has Solomon Eshon on the tithables list of John Potters as a "boy" working for master Arthur MacKallan. His brothers Daniel and Jonathan are working with him. [5]

Jun 1736: "Daniel Eshon is granted the right to a new road leading out of Nassawadox Neck. The inhabitants of the Neck sign that they are in agreement that the road is an improvement. The said John refuses to pay the balance due. Case agreed and dismissed. [6]

Tax List: 10 Jun 1737, Northampton Co., VA. Solomon Eshom is a tithable under the master John Fraiser in the tithables list of Hillary Stringer. Bell, [7]

Lawsuit: John Frazor accuses Solomon Eshon of assault, Jul 1738, Northampton Co., VA. Jul 1738: "John Frazor complains against Solomon Eshon for assault. The case must have been more serious than the usual since the complaint asks for a Jury to decide. The said John claims the extent of his injuries and what the result will be. The Jury was called; as well as several witnesses. Judgement for the Dft."[8]

Tax List: 11 Jun 1739, Northampton Co., VA. Solomon Eshon is a Master with young John "Mileken" a tithable under him in the tithables list of Major Peter Bowdoin. [9]

Tax List: 1740, Northampton Co., VA. 1740: "Sol Esham" is a master on the tithables list of John Custis. [10]

Jul 1740: "A lengthy account to Martha Addison, widow of John Addison for charges to the said John's estate was filed, May 10 1740. Charges are for getting in crop, appraisal of crop, sums paid to Solomon Eshom for work in the crop...[11]
