Marilyn had a twin who was either stillborn or died at birth. She did not seem to have a very loving relationship with her mother, but she loved her paternal grandmother Millie. A story in the family was that she had quite a temper as a small child and started to hold her breath when she was angry. She was throwing a one of her breath-holding tantrums and her father picked her up and dropped her in the horse trough in mid-winter, and she broke the ice when she fell in. That was allegedly the last tantrum she threw. When her parents moved from Iowa to Albuquerque ca. 1934, she felt she was being taken from Grandma Millie. In Albuquerque, her father built the family an adobe house, which was small but comfortable, until the summer all the kids got the measles and had to sleep in one bed in the heat. They moved again to Coronado, California in 1941, and her sisters said that she was snubbed in high school, which they thought negatively affected her for the rest of her life. In 1946 she married Fred Smith who I believe was a Navy officer, and they went on to have five children, Andrew, Peter, Phillip, Priscilla, Matt, and I am not sure of the order.
