Biography

James Samuel Estes was born October 14, 1816, in Lincoln county, Kentucky, a son of John Estes and Nancy (Berry) Estes. On March 8, 1855, in Grundy county, Missouri, James married Ann Eliza Hobbs, born October 15, 1837, Ann died June 6, 1858, two months after the birth of her second child. James married secondly Elizabeth J. Hobbs, sister to Ann Eliza and both daughters of Isaac Hobbs and Sarah Ann (Gibson) Hobbs. James was the father of twelve children, two with Ann and ten with Elizabeth. [1]

Listed on the 1850 census as a surveyor. [2]

The Find A Grave memorial for James gives a date of birth of October 14, 1822. James is found on the 1860 Census, living in Madison Township, Grundy county, Missouri. His birth year is estimated as 1818 and his age is recorded as 42. Elizabeth's age is recorded as 19 years of age with a year of birth as 1841. Ann's daughter Margaret M. is living with them. Her son, William J. died only seven months after his mother. [3] On the 1870 Census, James' birth year is estimated as 1816, and his age is 64. Elisabeth's age is 36 with a year of birth of 1844 (estimated) [4]

There are two Find A Grave memorials for his first wife (and none for his second) One calls her Eliza America Estes and the other Eliza Ann (Hobbs) Estes.
