She was the last of our family who could speak Tsalagi (that's Cherokee for the rest of us) to some degree. She was a beautiful soul with time worn hands, and a green thumb. Nobody messed with Mama Rice! You never knew a harder working woman. If you left her table hungry, it was your own fault - because she was one of the best cooks on the planet. Yanna Rice April 4, 1928 - August 30, 2010 SALEM - Yanna Rice died August 30, 2010, in Salem, Oregon surrounded by family. Yanna was born April 4, 1928, in Shamrock, Texas to Jim and Bertha Evanoff. She graduated from Salem High School in 1946 and married her sweetheart, William Rice, the same year. They celebrated 49 happy years together. She enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, cooking, canning and poetry. She later married Jerome Jensen August 15, 2009, after being widowed 14 years. She devoted much of her life as a caregiver to family members, including her younger siblings. It was often said that you would never go hungry in her house. She was an excellent cook, and her Lemon Meringue Pie was awarded first prize at the Oregon State Fair. Yanna is survived by her husband, Jerome Jensen; sons, Gordon and Bradley Rice; brothers, Evon and Chet Evanoff; sister, Rose Taylor; granddaughters, Loretta, Angela, Veronica, and Kristine; and great-grandchildren, Steven, Jacob, Kimberly, and Tibi Ann. She was preceded in death by her sister, Dianne Kassner and her husband, William Rice. A private graveside service was held for immediate family September 8, 2010. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m., September 18, 2010, at Christ The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 4440 State Street, Salem, Oregon.
