1930-Evans Geneaological Association Third Biennial Reunion Winterset, Iowa Page 3 "Daddy's grandfather was killed in the Revolution," my mother said to me, when I was a boy, studying U.S. History. "He was killed at the Battle of Guildford Court House. He was a blacksmith and the day before the battle he worked all day long, shoeing horses of General Greene's cavalry. The next day he fought in the battle, and was killed."

That is all I remember, but I remember it accurately and well. She told it to me more than once. His name? I do not know. there was a Joseph Evans, possibly jacob's father, possibly his grandfather. I made some investigations once, and found that our ancestor was not a Continental. That leaves two possibilities. He may have been a North Carolina trooper, or he may have fought as a free lance without enlistment, as men often did, and as the celebrated John Burns at Gettysburg.

The troops of the various colonies or states have exactly the same standing in state and United States laws and history as the Continentals. But the United States has published lists of the Continentals while North Carolina has its Revolutionary records in manuscript only. And it would cost eight or ten dollars to get an expert clerk to look the matter up, if you care to trace it.

Maybe some of you want to join the aristocratic, patriotic D.A.R.'s.

The Jacob Evans family came from Davidson County, North Carolina. Guildford county adjoins this on the east. From Davidson county, Guilford Court House was about fifteen miles. Our ancestor was a blacksmith, but have been regularly enlisted with the state troops, or he may have had a shop at Guilford Court House.

The battle was fought March 15, 1781. Grandfather Jacob Evans was born in 1797." [1]
