"4. THEOPHILUS4 EVANS (JONATHAN3, THOMAS2, LOTT1) was born November 19, 1746 in North Carolina. He married SUSAN CARVER.

Notes for THEOPHILUS EVANS: (From Delany Evans papers)

Traditional history of the family relates where Theophilus Evans shortly after the signing of the Liberty Point Declaration of Independence, suffered the indignity of being arrested by Frequard Campbell, and a band of his Tory followers, as a traitor to the King and was being conducted to Campbellton where it was their intention to hang him. In passing Gee’s Tavern, some distance out of town, Bettie Gee noting the commotion, and seeing the calvaloads passing, with Theopilus Evans, hands tied behind him among them, went to the door, and accosted them, signing out "What’s the trouble, and what are you going to do with Oppie Evans?" and upon being answered by their spokesman of the party to the effect, ‘We have caught the damn traitor and we are going to hang him", she parlayed with them, urging that all hands stop, get down, tether your horses, and come in "and warm a bit, both inside and out", whereupon the party did stop and dismount, taking their prisoner with them, went into the "Taproom of the Tavern, where a brisk fire of lighted woodknots, in the fireplace was going full duty, furnishing both heat and light, while the howling blast of a winter’s night prevailed outside. To further humiliate the prisoner, he was not allowed to sit down, or to warm, but was stood in the corner in a remote part of the large room, but very convenient to the door, opening outward, which attracted no attention, but furnished egress to the back yard. With the stern evidence outside, the comfortable effects of the fire being but partially remedial, "A bowl of hut punch" was suggested, whereupon Bettie Gee retired to make it, and with a reputation for accomplishment in that particular line, she soon returned, with a bowl of steaming hot accomplishment in that particular line, she soon returned, with a bowl of steaming hot punch with it’s aroma of spice and lemon permeating the very air, which was highly appreciated, and soon consumed, adding to the comfort of their "innards" the waning fire had failed to give, and as is usually the case, the company became "merry" with their tongues apparently hung in the middle, were wagging at both ends, a second supply of punch was ordered, and of course Bettie Gee retired to make it, resolved to make it a bit stronger, that same night better serve her undertaking, while out of the room, on pretext of making the punch, she slipped out in the yard, and to the door, before which stood Theopilus Evans on the inside and noiselessly "Cracking name" only sufficient to introduce her hand, with a sharp knife, she cut the throngs, that bound his hands, and his feet, whispering to him "Be quiet, don’t move, look to me for the sign, and for your prompt release." The fire having greatly spent itself, the original supply of punch having supplied any deficiency of head, the last installment of the luscious punch arrived, and being placed in the middle of the table, all hands "proceeded to business" when "Candles" were called for the waning fire, making it darker than was appreciated, when Bettie Gee returned with the candles she noting the desired effect on the company for the liberal supply of punch, she placed one candle near one end of the table, and the other near the other end, and that done, in retiring with her knee, she upset the table precipitation lights and the punch bowl to the floor which created a crash and darkness at the same time, and taking advantage of the momentary excitement, she pushed Theopilus and out of the door where a saddled horse awaited him swift enough to defy capture and to gain escape. It is interesting to related this connection, that Bettie Gee was the grandmother of the late Dr. W. G. McDuffie of Fayetteville NC, who is a brother of Senator McDuffie of S.C. who it is said, was a near kinsman of the wife of the older Wade Hampton of S.C. Again is said of the patriotic branch of the family, that a sister of Theopilus and George Evans, at the time just after the battle of Guildford’s Court House when Cornwallis was retreating toward Wilmington, and to when the Cape Fear River was in Freshet, with the water out of banks and spread to the width of perhaps a mile, to save the fine horses of herself, and her brother from falling into the hands of the enemy, riding one and leading two others, jumped into the raging torrent and swimming them across, rode to General Groom’s camp, and advising them of the exact whereabouts of the British, her pluck and courage was highly commended, and she was accorded every possible courtesy.

Children of THEOPHILUS EVANS and SUSAN CARVER are:

i. GEORGE WASHINGTON5 EVANS, b. September 26, 1776.

ii. ELIZA EVANS, b. January 18, 1790.

5. JOSIAH EVANS4 SR (JONATHAN3 EVANS, THOMAS2, LOTT1) was born December 09, 1731 in Spring Hill, Marsh Township, PA. He married SARAH CARVER 1752. She was born 1734 in Pasqustank, PA.

Notes for JOSIAH EVANS SR: (From Delaney Evans papers)

Of the progeny of Jonathan Evans, Jr., and his wife Mary Savage,: Josiah (1), the first-born, married Sarah Carver of Pasqustank Co., and had one son and is said two sisters, who moved to Mississippi when that state was a territory. The son named was Josiah (1), I’ve no records of the daughters. It is said that Josiah (1) owned and operated a fleet of vessels sailing out of Wilmington, and at the time of the Revolutionary War, he having died some eight years prior, the son Josiah caused to be fitted out as Privateer for the use of the Colonists, further detail of this branch of the family remains incomplete. No record throughout the research covering some 25 years, has come to my knowledge of any member of the Evans family of the Upper Cape Fear, being other than a Loyal Whig, with whom they were identified. Two sons of Jonathan Evans of PA,and his wife Mary Savage, were signers of the Liberty Point Declaration of Independence of 6-20-1775, Theophilus, age 29 years, and David his brother, at the age of 22.

Child of JOSIAH SR and SARAH CARVER is:

i. JOSIAH EVANS5 JR, b. March 07, 1767, Cumberland Co, NC; d. October 07, 1841, Cumberland Co, NC; m. (1) REBECCA LOCKE, December 02, 1790, Cumberland Co, NC; b. December 05, 1771; d. November 01, 1826, Cumberland Co, NC Home Cemetery; m. (2) SARAH KIRKPATRICK, October 25, 1829, Cumberland Co, NC; b. Abt. 1776; d. March 02, 1852."
