Biography

John was born in July 4, 1821 to Mary Simpson and Ezekiel Evans. John was orphaned at a young age and was brought up by an Uncle Billy.[1]

While still in his boyhood, John met Sarah Stewart, whose parents had also died early. John and Sarah would marry when she was 16 and he was 21. They had 9 children, two of whom died in early childhood, the youngest born after her father’s death at 41, probably of typhoid.[2]

John Evans passed away in July 1862.

Research notes

Harden Evans (1854-1925) was mistakenly placed in the family in at least one family. This individual was the son of Hiram Evans, who also lived in Pike County, IL in 1854.

With a wealth of knowledge about the Evans family and after extensive family research through 1984, John's granddaugther Ruby Thomson had no indication that John ever served in the Civil War.[3]

As of 1980 some descendants believed that John was buried in the Griggsville, IL area.[4]

John Evans and Sarah M. Stewart married Harrison Co. Oh 22 Dec 1842 By William Adams Presbyterian minister[5]

The Uncle Billy who may have raised John was likely William Evans, the brother of Ezekiel Evans.

In 1850, John Evans (28, b. OH, farmer) was head of household in Pike County, IL with Sarah Evans (23, b. OH), Ezekiel R. Evans (6, b. IL), James S. Evans (4, b. IL), Samuel A. Evans (2, b. OH), and Mary M. Evans (7/12, b. IL).[6]

In 1860, John Evans (40, b. OH, farmer) was head of household with Sarah M. Evans (34, b. OH), P.R. (E.R.?) Evans (Male, 17, b. IL, laborer), J.S. Evans (Male, 16, b. IL), S.A. Evans (Male, 12, b. IL), S. J. Evans (Female, 7, b. IL), and Elizabeth Evans (3, b. IL).[7]
