Biography

Joseph Evans was born March 8, 1765, in Evesham Township, Burlington county, New Jersey, a son of Joshua Evans and Priscilla (Collins) Evans. On February 6, 1789, Joseph married Elizabeth Bishop, who died in childbirth, February 3, 1797, leaving Joseph with five children, ^[1] including:

• William Evans, who married Rebecca Kirby

• Job Evans, born September 15, 1793, died 1882, his common law wife, Nancy Finch

• Samuel Evans

• Joseph Evans, Jr., born February 3, 1797, died September 2, 1851, married Amy Hormel

Joseph married secondly, Mrs. Lydia (Austin) Barnes, daughter of Caleb Austin and Lydia (Mason) Austin, and widow of Joseph Barnes. Lydia had no children from her first marriage. Joseph and Lydia became the parents of five more children, ^[2] including:

• Charles Evans

• Aaron Evans

• Ruth Evans

Joseph Evans, Sr. died February 7, 1849, in Warren county, Ohio, at the age of 83 years. He is buried in the Dodds Cemetery, in Lebanon, Warren county, Ohio. There is a photograph of his headstone on his Find A Grave memorial, on which his surname is inscribed as Evens, and therefore his memorial may be found under the name Joseph Evens. ^[3]
