John Evans 1801-1875

According to various census returns, John Evans was born between 1801 and 1806, with 1801 or 02 looking most likely. His death registration also states 1801. All Censuses note Llanuwchllyn, Merionethshire as his place of birth.

On the 13th of May, 1822 John married Margaret Evan, possibly daughter of Edward Evan of llanycil, in Llanuwchllyn, where both of them lived.

The Census of 1841 tells us that Margaret was older than John and that they had three children living with them: Miriam (14), Zechariah (11) and Sarah (8). Also living with them was John Roberts, 30 year old male servant (he worked on the Glanllyn estate). John and Margaret`s wedding was witnessed by a John Roberts – probably the same person. The Census gives John Evans's employment as Fuller. Their address is given as Pandy in Llanuwchllyn village. A pandy is a fulling mill, but the area of its location in Llanuwchllyn was also known as the Pandy. The other part of the village, nearer the church was know as Llan.

In 1851 the family are living at Pandy in Llanuwchllyn. The children include daughters Elizabeth (28) and Miriam (26). Both of them knitting and nursing as their occupations, and both of them have infant children on the census. The grandchild next to Elizabeth is David Hughes and the one next to Miriam is John Davies. Both grandsons to John Evans were born that year. Younger daughter Sarah is 18 and is a servant. John Roberts is also still there.

Sometime between 1851 and 1861 the family moved from the Pandy, the area near the chapel, to Ty'n y pant, which was located outside the village, up the hill towards Ty'n y pry. On the Census of 1861 John's occupation is described as Agricultural Labourer, and Margaret a Labourer`s Wife. Daughter Elizabeth and her son David are still there. Sarah is visiting from Llandderfel and has her two children Margaret and Catherine with her. Margaret is described as grand daughter, possibly because she was living with her grandparents. Sarah and Catherine are described as visitors. There is also a one year old infant named John Jones, who is no description as grandson or visitor. Perhaps he was an illegitimate son of Sarah? John Roberts is also still lodging with the family.

Ty`n y pant must have been much quieter in 1871. John Roberts is no longer there (or not mentioned), and apart from John and Margaret, the only other person in the house is daughter Elizabeth who is a Stocking Knitter. John's occupation is noted as Farm Labourer.

Agnes Morgan`s family history states that her Great Grandfather was known as John Ffoulkes Evans. In his obituary in Y Goleuad, it states that John's father was the well known Very Reverend Evan Ffoulkes, who preached across Wales and helped establish Calvinistic Methodism in Llanuwchllyn and further afield. It also states that his two brothers, who both pre-deceased him, were the Reverends Ffoulk Evans, Machynlleth and Robert Evans, Talybont/Trefriw.

John Evan's obituary appeared in Y Goleuad, as follows:

Evans. - On the 11th of this month (September), aged 74 years, John Evans, Pandy, Llanuwchllyn died. Youngest son of the Very Reverend Evan Ffoulkes, and brother to the late Reverends Ffoulk Evans, Machynlleth, and Robert Evans, Talybont.

John died on the 11th of September, 1875, followed by Margaret in 1879. They are buried in plot 065 of Capel y Pandy, Llanuwchllyn.

John's GRO Death Certificate reads: "71 / Eleventh September 1875 Pandy Llanuwchllyn / John Evans / Male / 74 years / Labourer / Chronic Bronchitis several years Certified by ?P. O. Jones M.R.C.S. / Evan Evans Son Present at the Death Pandy Llanuwchllyn / Thirteenth September 1875 / Edward Jones Registrar"

In 1879 the Welsh language newspaper “Y Dydd” carried the obituary of a certain John Robert Parry who had worked for forty years as a labourer on the Glanllyn Estate and who had resided for many, many years with John Evans and family at Ty`n y Pant. John was given a paupers funeral. Paid employees of the union workhouse carried his coffin and he was buried next to the wall in the Country Church. None of the businesses drew their curtains, nobody left their work to pay him his last respects. There was no choir singing in front of the alter. Just silence.

"A Fulling Mill (Welsh - "Pandy") is one which undertakes the process of Fulling. Fulling is the beating and cleaning of cloth in water. The process shrank the loose fibres of the cloth, making it a denser fabric. Superior cloth was usually fulled, dyed, brushed with teasels to raise the pile, and finally trimmed of loose threads to produce a finished surface of great quality.

To begin with, fullers or "walkers" trampled the cloth with their feet in a trough of water. The widespread adoption of fulling mills in the 1300's eventually took the fulling industry away from towns to heads of water in the countryside. Greater quantities of cloth could be processed more quickly.

The cloth was placed in the fulling stocks with fuller's earth (a soapy clay) and pumped in water. Here it was pounded with wooden hammers, themselves driven by a tappet wheel turned by the water wheel. "
