Biography

Pearl was born in 1905 in Victoria County, Ontario, second child of Charles & Amelia Ewen. When she was about seven years old the family went west to Saskatchewan, settling near the Saskatchewan/Manitoba border north of Moosomin, Sask. After graduating from High School Pearl attended Normal School in Regina. She taught school for several years before marrying Scotty Doughty of Moreland, Sask.

Note from daughter, Marie Svedahl: My mother, Pearl was a school teacher but she was also a photographer. I never asked when or why or how she obtained her camera (a box-type Brownie) but it would have been when she was attending Normal School in Regina as there were pictures of her and girl-friends in her photo album. Of course, later there were dozens of pictures of me, from new-born onwards. And so it seemed only natural that I, too would become the "family photographer"!!

Marie remembers her mother telling her that she had lost a baby before Marie was born (1931) and then losing another before Archie was born (1936). There could possibly have been a third one as well - not counting Archie. Pearl and her two sisters seem to have had difficulties having children - of the three sisters, Pearl's Marie is the only child to have survived. Would Pearl's high blood pressure have caused this?

Archie John When Pearl was pregnant with Archie John in 1936, she was confined to bed rest because of high blood pressure. Then she had a stroke. They had a hired girl Mae Sambrook (who later married Tom Doughty). She was taken to a hospital in Regina where she had Archie John. Pearl came home after the baby was born, but the baby stayed in the hospital. There was obviously something wrong as he should have come home with her. Marie remembers (at age 5) being sent down to Granny & Grandpas (half mile walk) to have them phone the hospital for a report - not having a phone themselves. Marie's memory says Archie lived less then a month. The next thing she remembers is his funeral. It was held in their house - and she remembers seeing him lay in a box on the kitchen table. He was buried in the Pangman Cemetery- south west corner. There wasn't any money for a headstone at that time, so he never had one.

Pearl would go home to her Mother’s every summer. Her husband and daughter would drive her there and then come back to get her. The last few years of her life she lived full time with her mother.
