Biography

The birth of Sarah on May 23, 1797, the daughter of William Ewing and Mary McNeill, was recorded in an old family bible owned by her parents. She and her siblings were born in old Greenbrier, Virginia on Swago Creek, now Pocahontas County. In 1810 when she was 13 she moved with her family to Gallia County, Ohio. [1]

A Ewing history book which goes into detail about the lives of her father, grand father and uncle also make a few brief mentions of Sarah. After moving with her family to Gallia County, Ohio she married a man named John Wallace in 1823. He was apparently a widower with children because when he died a year later, in 1824, she was left with 4 children. She herself died in 1827 in Vinton, and left no progeny of her own. [2]

Research Note

An unsourced Find A Grave Memorial claims Sarah Jane Ewing, daughter of Swago Bill and Mary NcNeill Ewing was married to a John Wallace and a John Thomas Mills. A series of children were then ascribed to her with the latter man and her death is reported to be in 1880 in Wayne County, West Virginia. Evidence suggests that only the marriage of Sarah, who is subject of this profile, to John Wallace is correct. John Thomas Mills most like married another Sarah, or Sarah Jane and he should not be attached to this profile. [3]
